some redesign updates

I have been toiling away trying to get my new custom theme finished before the February 5th deadline and so far it has not been going so great. I found a color scheme at kuler called Chemical Crime that I been trying to use for the color theme of the site. I am just trying to figure out the best way for what elements get styled with what color. I sort of have a very rough work in progress right now of what I did so far. I am not very happy with the way the background came out. However I am happy with the way the header is looking so far. I am trying to go with a Distressed look. I am getting kind of sick of all the glossy/shiny web 2.0 look and want to try something different.

9 Essential Principles for Good Web Design

PSDTuts has a pretty good article on nine principles for good web design. I am going to print this out and add it to my notes. As someone who is just starting out in the field of web design (mostly as a hobby right now), I find this information pretty valuable. I had no clue on what precedence was or how important alignment or consistency played in important part of make a website that doesn’t suck. I am going be sure I incorporate these principles as I work on my first wordpress theme.

keep on rollin baby…you know what time it is

The redesign is coming along quite nicely. I finished up the How to make a Wordpress Theme Tutorial at wpdesigner.com and I am now in the process of getting everything in to the layout i am using. Once that is complete I am going to start working on the typography and then the graphics/colors. I can’t believe how easy it is to theme wordpress now that I have a better handle on the template tags and how everything is laid out. I’ll post some screenshots at some point of my work in progress.

Redesign updates

I am still plugging away at my new design and the quest to learn wordpress theming. I have the final layout all done in a simple xhtml and css layout. I am currently following along on small potato’s most excellent wordpress theming tutorial. So far I am learning more on how to put together a theme then I ever did. If you are somewhat fluent in xhtml/css/php it can be a little slow reading because he does spell out what exactly everything is doing. However this is awesome material for someone new who is just learning about coding for the web for the first time.

Finally working on my redesign

I know I been saying this for a long time, but I am finally getting around to working on my own custom wordpress theme finally. I am taking the fixed 3 over 4 column layout from CSS Tinderbox and using that as sort of a base. I am going to drop the bottom 4 cells and keep the top 3.

What I am currently working on is getting everything laid out how I want it. Once I am finished with that I am going to create the actual wordpress “theme” with it and not decorate anything yet. Once I get that done, I will then go back and start working on making it all pretty.

The reason I am breaking this up into chunks is so that I actually get this project done. Before I got so overwhelmed with the big picture and how i am going to make it look that I got discouraged. This time around I am going to get everything laid out first and working before I even start worrying about making it look pretty. Hopefully by that time I will have a good idea on the colors and shit like that.
