It’s official…good bye free time

Well it’s official, I got my acceptance letter in the mail today for Medaille College’s Business program. I’ll be going back to school starting January 31st. I’m pretty excited and really looking forward to going back. For awhile now it has been one of my goals to get a degree in Business after I got my Tech degree. Looks like I need to get all my personal projects out of the way before hand.

9 Essential Principles for Good Web Design

PSDTuts has a pretty good article on nine principles for good web design. I am going to print this out and add it to my notes. As someone who is just starting out in the field of web design (mostly as a hobby right now), I find this information pretty valuable. I had no clue on what precedence was or how important alignment or consistency played in important part of make a website that doesn’t suck. I am going be sure I incorporate these principles as I work on my first wordpress theme.

DIE SHAREPOINT DIE

I been trying to not to blog about work too much but this is just friggin retarded. So we been running a sharepoint server at work for storing all our documentation on (WSS 3.0 to be exact). Everything was fine and it worked like a champ till it just up and shit all over itself for no reason what so ever. My co-worker and I tried everything we can think to figure out what the hell happened to get it fixed. First there was nothing in the so called logs that was even remotely usefull. Every single piece of documentation that my co-worker found on trying to get the fucking piece of shit fix didn’t work. Hell we can’t even get out data out of the database or even reinstall sharepoint and point it to the existing database. Needless to say we lost everything not matter what.

So now we are going to ditch running a web server running windows and ditch sharepoint and move on to a linux/oss solution. We are going to have two identical servers we have left over from a legacy app we were using to use a production and development webservers. We’ll use the dev box to hammer on and strictly use the production box for well….production only. We’ll need to come up with a good backup solution to that way if shit crashes…we are not completely hosed.

I been checking out a couple of document management apps and I found something we are going to try out. We are going to try out the community version of Alfresco. It looks like it will do everything we need. I’ll post more thoughts on it when we start rolling it out and working on it some more.

Now up on Design Deadline

I signed up and submitted my site to designdeadline.com. The site describes itself as:

Design Deadline is like a monthly CSS Reboot minus the suck. Or a monthly May 1st Reboot without the ridiculous Flash bias and hard to use website. And with a more flexible, practical deadline, community features and an easier-to-use website that will display the best new and redesigned sites from around the world starting Tuesday, February 5th, 2008 at 12pm EST.

I been wanting to do a CSS reboot for awhile now and I have been finally getting around to coming up with my own wordpress theme. I am going to use signing up as a motiviation to get my redesign done.
