October 22, 2007 Here are some updates on whats going on with my laptop.
I got my replacement 1 gig SODIMM from Kingston. I went and installed it and the laptop was hard locking after five to ten minutes, it was not blue screening like it was before. After tinkering with it, I took the 256mb SODIMM out of the laptop and left the 1 gig one in. The laptop has been running like a champ since then. I think there was an incompatibility with the IBM ram and the Kingston RAM.
I have Kubuntu running on it now and I recently just upgraded to Gusty. Pretty much everything just worked out of the box. I got my HP Deskjet 5550 working just fine, I got my Ipod working with Amarok, and I have the ATI drivers installed with the restricted driver manager. Everything just works.
Linux has come a long way since I started using it back in 2000. I remember having to compile a kernel module for my SB live card. Driving around town looking for a shop that carried hardware modem’s that were supported under linux. Then try to get my new hardware based modem to connect to my earthlink account. Manually configuring my video and monitor settings by hand so that it had the right resolution. I learned a lot back then on how things worked and I loved to tinker with it. But nowadays when I don’t have the time, it’s just nice to have a system up and running in faster then windows.

October 16, 2007 Just talked to my brother this afternoon for the last time in awhile. He is in the National Guard and his unit was deployed out to Africa for a year. He just spent the last month down in Bragg getting all his shit together. I am pretty greatful that he didn’t end up in Iraq or Stan, however I bet my mom is a wreck right about now. Hopefully I will be able to keep in touch with him when gets over that and settled.

October 15, 2007 I just read about this via Lifehacker. I really can’t wait for Google to roll out this app, I been lately organizing my personal “to do lists” with Gcal and the To-Do List gadget on my iGoogle web page. I think it would be easier to just keep everything within one app instead of spread out.

October 14, 2007 Now that I got my laptop back up and in somewhat running shape (still have some RAM issues to deal with). I am going to start a new project, I call it “The Great Linux Experiment”. Right now we are living with my in-laws while our house is being built. Because we do not have a lot of room for my full desktop computer setup, I been using my trusty IBM Thinkpad T42 (type 2378 for those of you interested) as my main machine. I really want to start using linux more on the desktop side of things instead of just on the server side. So now I have Kubuntu 7.04 installed on my Thinkpad and will be using it full time. I’ll keep updates as to how I am doing things I used to do in windows but now I am doing in linux.

October 9, 2007 I finally made the switch from Bloglines to Google Reader for all my RSS feed reading needs. I like how google reader integrates with the rest of my google stuff (i.e my iGoogle setup). One of the problems I faced was coming up with a way to transfer all my saved articles in bloglines. I didn’t want to bookmark everything and then have 20 million bookmarks saved. One way I did it was trying out Google Notebook. I installed the firefox plugin and start going through all my saved articles and transfering parts of the content I wanted to save to a few notebooks I had set up. I am going to play around with notebooks some more and see if I can use it for my main tool for note taking online.
