Linux.Ars End of the year award
December 22, 2004
Well time to throw in my votes for this year..
Contributor of the Year - god i dont even know on this one. Sad to say i really dont pay much attention to this..
Best Community - the Unbuntu guys, because everyone else is raving about them
Distribution of the Year - Unbuntu, because i can load it up on my laptop and dont have to dick around much to get everything working.
Desktop Application of the Year - split between firefox and thunderbird. Its all i use and its in my honest opinion the best apps out there for mail and browsing
Server Application of the Year - going to have to give Nagios the nod on this one. I been learning it lately and its pretty badass for an open source network monitoring app.
Web Application of the Year - going with wordpress on this one. It’s what powers this site and i find it very easy to use and customize.
Development Application of the Year - anything that involves perl/php. ITs what i know
Hardware Vendor of the Year - Nvidia, because they provide some of the best support for their hardware in Linux
Online Publication of the Year - going to say fuck the riules and say LKF, i dont really read anything else.
Dead Tree Publication of the Year - I am a big fan of Linux Journal, i been reading them forever and love their articles. They have a little bit of everything for all skill levels and interests
Best Newcomer to the Community - Unbuntu, for making Debian more sex then it already is
Best Improved in the Community - Novell, for the work they are doing with Ximian and Suse
Most Anticipated Application - A groupware solution that can give Exchange a run for its money
Thumbs Down - Going to have to say the Fedora community on this one. FC1 was fucking AWESOME when it hit and had alot of promise. Too bad the last two releases were kinda shitty . I also hate how there is 20 million seperate repositories for RPM’s instead of one big central one (a la Debian) . Hopefull with the release of fedora extras’s that will fix that issue.
