freenx on fedora core 3

So i got around to installing Fedora Core 3 on a spare machine here at work. I been wanting to play around with selinux so i figure i would give it a shot. I wanted to use a remote X desktop and didnt feel like using VNC. To me VNC is slow as hell, it has its uses but there were better alternatives out there. So i knew there were debian packages for freenx and checked to see if there was any for Fedora Core 3. After hitting google i found a link to an article by Rick Stout at FedoraNEWS.org.

Here is the link to the original article

http://fedoranews.org/contributors/rick_stout/freenx/

Below is what i had to do in order to get it going in fedora core 3 using a windows client

wget the following files, according to the site they are for Fedora Core 2 but they will work fine in 3

wget http://fedoranews.org/contributors/rick_stout/freenx/freenx-0.2.7-0.fdr.1.noarch.rpm
wget http://fedoranews.org/contributors/rick_stout/freenx/nx-1.4.0-0.fdr.3.i386.rpm

when you have both of the rpms downloaded, just run rpm -Uvh on both to install them.

Next you will need to grab a client to connect to it. I use Nomachine’s windows NX client, it’s free and easy to use. You can grab the client from Nomachine’s site here

http://www.nomachine.com/download_fil2.php?Prod_Id=16

Once you have this downloaded and installed make sure you copy the client.id_dsa.key which is located in /etc/nxserver on the linux machine and copy it to the local machine in C:Program FilesNX Client for Windowsshare

Once you have that copied over, just fire up the wizard, add the ip/hostname to the linux machine running nxserver , pick a resolution and which desktop you are using ( I use GNOME) and you should be good to go. If all goes well you should see the following screen (or something close to it).

new firefox!

Yeap Firefox hit the big 1.0 yesterday. I went and grabbed it and so far so good. It even feels much more snappier then the previous versions. Now i just have to wait for more extensions and themes i am using to get upgraded.

I started goofing around with perl again, i would like to overhaul my FTP shell scripts to perl scripts using Date::Manip and NET:SFTP (or NET:SCP). It should seem like an easy task to convert them over.

I got the Christmas list from Amanda, i need to start getting her stuff. Atleast it will be easier this time because i will have a good idea of what sure wants from Christmas ;)

back with a brand new edition

After having a fun filled weekend and spending $500 getting my car back. I am feeling much better. The reason why i had to drop some cash to get my car back was due to the fact that it was getting fixed. I slammed into a boulder on the side street of our office building doing about $1800 damage to it in the process. It was dark and raining and i didnt turn wide enough around the median and hit the rock, didnt even see it. Man was i pissed, but atleast i wasnt the only one that has hit it before. 2 other guys in our office it hit already and countless others have had near misses with it, its just pretty dam hard to see at night, especially if it was raining.

The good news is after doing some digging around I found out the local power company owns the median. At some point this week i am going to get their customer service a call and see if they can do something about it.

I finally got my ipod from Freeipods.com, my 20 gig ipod came in last Thursday. Man this thing has to be one of the coolest pieces of tech i have ever owned. Its nice having almost my entire music collection in my backpack with me. I also noticed that it can store contacts in vcard format and it has a calendar app built in with ical support (!). When i get some freee time i am going to need to explore that a bit with what i been working on.

Well time to go, need to get back to spending more quality time with my hunny :)
