everything and the kitchen sink

Yea so i havent been posting in awhile, i been really busy with things and havent had time to really post anything worth while. So far this is what happend in the past couple of weeks…

-Finally have a internet connection in the apartment that isnt dial-up. We went with Verizon DSL and so far my experience with them hasnt been that good. We are already had to get the modem swapped out once because it was more unstable then Charles Manson. After we got the new modem from Verizon things have been ok so far (crosses fingers).

-Things have been going good at the new place. Amanda and i Couldn’t be happier. We also have a new addition to the family. Her name is Matilda and she is a nine week old kitten. Here are a few pics of her

Matilda 2

Here is also a picture of Amanda’s older cat Mia. This pic looks completely badass

-Did my first contracting job doing some Cisco work. It was kinda scarey at first but i am looking forward to doing more part time work for the guy.

-Now going to be working at school part time in the telecom. tech. department. Going to be working on PCs and helping setup and test labs for the Cisco classes. Which should be cool, atleast i’ll be working with gear again on a regualr basis so i dont forget everything.

-Finally got php5 working in debian. I found a repository that has debs. They are being made buy the guys over at Dotdeb.org. They specialize in providing up to date packages for turning you debian box into a LAMP platform. To get the most up to date packages check out their site for the entries to add to your sources.list file. Once you add those just do a quick apt-get update and you should be good to go.

-I got nxserver running on my debian box at work instead of using VNC. Here is a screen shot with me running it using Gnome 2.8 for shits grins. This ought to make Jorge happy that i am using Gnome instead of KDE.

nxserver+Gnome 2.8

-New Steven King book came out yesterday. The last book in the Dark Tower series has finally been released. I’m already oer a 100 pages in on it. I just need to find time to read it, i been waiting for this ever since i finished the prior book in the series.

-I’m starting to get frustrated with my Computer Art and Design Class. I took the class because i thought it would be fun and interesting. All i am right now is bored and frustrated. We are using eMacs in the lab and i am finding it a pain in the to do anything useful with it. I’ll admit i been using PC’s for a very long time, but there are things on that annoy the ever living shit out of me. For instance the one button mouse…no scroll whell, no side buttons…just one fucking button….how FUCKING usless. Plus to do certain keyboard combinations for simple things like copy, cut and paste on a PC is a little bit different on a Mac. They use the option key instead of the control key…..
no matter how much i work on the damn thing i keep going for the control key. Another thing is we are using Quark Express for our first project. The project involves taking a phrase or a word and doing shit with it in Quark. Man, it was cool for the first couple of classes but fuck i am really starting to get bored in the class. I’m hoping once we get into photoshop and stuff like that it will be better.

Well thats all for now, i got shit to do before i bouce out of here for the night.

down with zealotry

I dont know about anyone else but i am really really starting to get sick of all the zealotry lately. I’m sick and tired of people coming into the channel looking for help with a disliked distro or application and people making fun of them for using it. I can understand its all in good fun, but think about this. You have a windows user or a Mac user that comes in the channel for the first time, because he wants to give linux a shot. Either going full time or as a dual-boot on their PC/Laptop. They want to use X distro and try getting it running doing things they normally do with other OSes that they are familar with. Instead of getting help, they get smart ass remarks and people being asses. So now said person gets discouraged and goes back to using what they are using before. With bullshit like that will just make it easier for peter to win.

What some people forgot with Linux and OSS in general, they get to use what THEY want to use and what THEY are comfertable using. If someone wants to run mandrake over debian, fine. If they prefer using windowmaker over GNOME, so what. People need to have more tolerance.
